ANDERSON — This year, the Student Wellness Advocacy Team (SWAT), aims to expand upon the club's goals met last year. The club began this change by going to a Traction session, June 5-7. Traction is a program that teaches students about the ways and reasons to stay safe while driving.
“The purpose of the SWAT team going [to Traction] is to learn about traffic safety,” Madilyn Mckaughan, a second year member of SWAT and a sophomore at McDonald County High School said in an interview.
Mckaughan said SWAT is using information gained from the seminar to warn people about the dangers of unsafe driving.
“We are going to have a week where we award people for the correct traffic safety,” Mckaughan said.
During Red Ribbon Week, which will take place October 24-28, SWAT will be hosting a “Traction Week.” Throughout the week, SWAT members will have different themes that relate to safe driving, including a safe driving podcast.
Along with the Traction seminar, SWAT members plan to add more to the agenda this year to further assist students and staff with mental health needs. SWAT has already begun their “SWAT talks” again, which is a series of videos touching on different mental health concerns within the school.
Erica Price, family liaison for McDonald County High School and founder of SWAT, said she is adding new members and improving upon SWAT goals.
“We’re trying to organize and do some reorganization, we want to outreach more this year and have more structure,” Price said. “Last year was a starting year and we learned a lot from it, there were some things that needed to be changed and tweaked.”
