ANDERSON — McDonald County High School recently installed new cameras in the building to “enhance student safety,” and get a “better understanding of what's going on,” said Kevin Burgi, a MCHS assistant principal.

The new cameras were installed over the summer. Many students were not aware of the new camera installations until the new school year began.

“It might've been nice to know. Even if I didn't, they're still nice to have,” Killian Stones, a sophomore attending MCHS said.

Burgi said the cameras are having a positive impact in the school so far.

“They can be used to look back and get some clarification on different situations,” Burgi said. “It also changes behavior that might not be according to the student handbook.”

Some students favor the new cameras, however the topic is controversial.

“The cameras are always gonna make us feel safe and we know that there's always gonna be someone watching you," Stones said. “The cameras help kids make sure they aren't doing stuff that could jeopardize me or others.”

There have been no new plans to install more cameras in the immediate future unless it is necessary. Overall, the new camera installations came as a surprise to many.
