ANDERSON — McDonald County High School hosted a Fall Sports Awards Night for all MCHS athletes participating in fall sports. Athletes were recognized for their achievements and awarded with a certificate.
“I am proud of all my athletes,” said Nathan Haikey, the high school men’s and women's soccer coach. “The Fall Sports Awards Night is a great opportunity to recognize young athletes and to give them some time to hangout with kids from other sports participating in it as well.”
Haikey said athletes from separate sports don't get to mingle as much with athletes from sports outside of their own.
“Cross country, men’s soccer, women’s golf, volleyball, softball, and football athletes all got to participate in the Fall Sports Awards Night,” Haikey said.
The event started with a delicious meal. The smell of freshly baked bread filled the room. Anyone who came got to eat a free meal provided by the school. The meal consisted of salad, bread, beverages, and more. Once everyone got their meal, the ceremony began.
The award ceremony started off with awarding academic letter winners.
In order to have received an academic letter, athletes must have maintained a 3.5 GPA and had no D’s or F’s for 2 semesters. Freshmen were not eligible. There were a total of 56 academic letter winners, 89 letter winners, 23 four year seniors, 28 all conference selections, 9 all district selections, 3 all region selections, and 2 all state selections.
“To our parents and families, thank you for everything you've done for the coaching staff and the athletes this season,” Logan Grab said. “From driving a couple miles to team dinners and everything in between, you've been a constant source of encouragement. A special thank you to our sponsors, you truly make a difference in the lives of our athletes and the types of opportunities that they are afforded.”
All the coaches were proud to award their hard working athletes. It was a night to remember for the soon-to-leave seniors. They might leave but they will leave steps behind for the new alumni and athletes to follow.
