ANDERSON - McDonald County High School agriculture students and teachers hosted the school’s annual “AG Day” Wednesday, September 28. The department showed farm animals and offered farm related booths for the county's elementary students to tour.
At the event, students saw various farm animals such as cows, chickens, horses, pigs and goats. High school students taught the second grade students about the importance of raising different farm animals while students got to see the topic of the presentations first-hand.
A stand with corn, squash and wild flowers was available for the second grade students to view and touch. Katy Manley, an AG instructor at MCHS was the teacher who hosted the event.
“The purpose for AG Day at the high school was to teach the local second graders about everything agriculture,” Manley said. “We have a variety of things, different rotations, that they can learn about.”
Maggie Pratt and Cammie Holcomb, two seniors at the high school, directed the stand with crops and flowers.
“Plants are the most important things, they take care of a lot of stuff,” Holcomb said. “It’s important for us to educate all the kids about where their food comes from.”
Holcomb explained that planting is a hands-on experience for the students and will hopefully teach them lessons they can carry on through the rest of their lives.
Cierra Buckland, a second grade teacher at Noel Primary, brought her students to the farm fun. Buckland said she hopes the students take what they learned at the event and have fun exploring the importance of agriculture. Buckland said her goals for the event were for students to enjoy their time while learning more about agriculture.
Harper Martin, a second grader taking part in AG day, explained her favorite parts of the event.
“Well my favorite part of today is the field trip, which we’re on right now,” Martin said while picking at her flower seeds in the cup she got from the flower stand. “And also the tractor part and the horses.”
AG Day was an event that taught the young students about how the farm world works while giving them the chance to enjoy taking a step into the world of agriculture.
